What Are Dado Bits? Functions, Types and Woodworking Uses

This article explains the basic definition, common types and core applications of dado bits

Dado bits are specialized woodworking router bits used to cut flat, wide, square grooves on wood panels. Different from standard straight bits, dado bits are designed for trench cutting, shelf grooves and panel fitting structures. They are essential tools for cabinet making and solid wood furniture production.

There are two main types of dado bits: fixed-size single dado bits and adjustable multi-blade dado sets. Fixed dado bits deliver consistent groove width for mass production. Adjustable dado sets allow users to change cutting width for different board sizes and assembly needs.

High-quality dado bits adopt tungsten carbide blades. They cut clean, chip-free grooves on solid wood, plywood and MDF boards. Smooth groove walls ensure tight panel fitting and stable structure. Dado bits are widely used for cabinet shelves, wooden partitions, drawer installation and frame groove processing.
